Title: First Screenshots

In this post, we would like to present you with the first screenshot gallery with images that we have taken directly from the pre-alpha version of the game. We should point out, however, that parts of the engine and visuals are still work in progress.

As you can see, our isometric engine is optimized to display a lot of items on the screen at the same time, without suffering any performance hits. This has been achieved by combining pre-rendered 2D shapes with 3D meshes. By using dynamic real-time lighting on all these elements, the implementation of things, such as different times of day, are easily possible and have become quite important for our world simulation as a whole.

There is another interesting aspect that you may find intriguing. Each one of the small items you can see in these screenshots, including small plants and the mushrooms, are actual in-game items, which means you can pick them up, harvest them, trade them, sell them or loot them.

Looks great, the first one reminds me a lot of Ultima VI, lol. Can you interact with all those items or are they just background graphics?

Yes, beside outlines on mouse over, you'll be able to display the items' names via key.

I'm really, really liking the visuals here. Also happy that it's your own engine and not Unity which often results in bland/artificial-looking and sometimes cartoony graphics (Tyranny, Pathfinder: Kingmaker etc) when it comes to games like these.

I agree with you that PF: K has bland / cartoony graphics, but is that really a result of the engine used.? I figured that was a deliberate art direction that Owlcat went with possibly because it is line with a lot of Pathfinder art.

Anyway, yes I really love how RB looks so far.

It really feels that way, also likely due to the assets used? No idea, honestly. And like I said, it's not just that game but the others as well. So far, I've never been wrong in calling out that engine just from the screenshots (when it comes to isometric games).

You could be right. I'm not a programmer or developer of any sort and can't say I have any hands on experience with Unity.  HBS Shadowrun games also have kind of cartoony looking characters, but like Kingmaker this cartoony art style was also reflected in their early concept art (still love those games though).  I'd say Expeditions: Viking is probably the best looking Unity game I've played.
