But while paused can you still access other menus such as the inventory or character sheet screens?

The game automatically pauses  if you enter the character screen or any other screen  (e.g. the map, journal, options, etc.), therefore you don't need to pause manually.

Also, can the game be paused in the real-time exploration part? Not having this is one of the many things I hated about D:OS.

You can pause but not interactively, which means you cannot freeze the world time and still scroll the camera.

I'm curious to know if the combat system will include cover, and how much detail of that rule can we expect to see implemented? Thanks.

We're using different checks to determine what kind of cover the target of a ranged attack has.

In most cases, we simply use a set of raycasts to calculate the approximate amount of occlusion. That will be displayed in percent values to the player.

The resulting modifiers to the attack are derived from those rules:

I can't see any "SFX" button in the particle editor. That normal?

Don't worry. Sound FX are elements like particle emitters,  lights, etc.

Is there going to be an exploration mode and a turn based combat mode and will there be a transition between the two while playing the game?

There is no transition. The game immediately switches from the real-time exploration with free movement to the turn-based combat mode on a hexagonal grid as soon as the encounter starts.

Off Topic / Late Backer Questions

I bookmarked the Kickstarter page but it seems I forgot to click the remind me option, so I missed out.  I was looking at the late backer options, and I want to get the Game Box Edition.  It doesn't mention it coming with a digital download code, so I assume it is stand-alone.  How will patches be supplied for the DRM free copy that comes with the Game Box Edition?  Are there plans for expansions or DLC, and if so, how will the DRM free Game Box Edition be able to get them.

I may just get both the Game Box Edition and a Digital Download just to be covered.  I prefer GOG, but  the Digital Download option says "choose between a Steam or DRM-free download key," but doesn't say which DRM free platform the key is for.  Is there any news on a GOG release?  Even if the Steam version is DRM free, I'm OK with that since the Game Box Edition comes with a DRM free copy, but if there will be future expansions or DLC, I don't want to have to chose which one to get them for.

the Game Box Edition will (most likely) have the DRM-free GoG version. For this version, we'll publish patches and DLCs on (as we do for the Steam version of course).
We will not have any post-release content that is only available for one platform, e.g. only for Steam, so, there is no difference whether you buy the Game Box Edition or the Digital Edition for Steam.
Only the early access and combat beta is for Steam only.

What is status on Monk, Linux & bard?

Unchanged, because we decided to invest the additional funds in content creation. The Monk and Bards classes (as well as the Linux port) would require an additional coder and animations. But we're still optimistic to implement the Monk at some point.

At the moment, we want to focus on developing and delivering the main game with the best content we can create.
