While the user interface of our combat alpha is still in the final polishing process, we can already present two screenshots from the upcoming scene.

A warband of orcs (along with a troll) ambushed the player's party in morning hours while traveling through the wilderness.

Some people noticed that the grid in the original combat alpha screens was difficult to "read".
Therefore, we played around with different display settings. During that process, we decided to let the player customize the grid display in various ways. Beside general opacity, the player can also switch to different color configurations (blue+yellow instead of red+green to bypass red–green color blindness).

Dark variant - medium opacity

Bright variant - high opacity

What kind of grid would you like to use in turn-based games with hexagons?

Once, we tried this outline grid system but decided against it because it looked too "modern" for the game. Beside Expeditions: Vikings, Shadowrun and XCom use such a visualisation and somehow it always looks very techy.

Beside the modern look, we would still need to find a way to damp down the highly detailed ground textures. But we'll think about designing our own grid variant based on outlines - let's see how far we can get.

The dark variate medium opacity is pretty cool, you see the grid very well and also the level too.

I'm looking forward to see it moving.

BTW, how long do you estimate duration of this combat in your example ? Is it even possible to flee    ?

From my experience when testing this particular combat, I would say about 15-20 minutes if you speed up the opponent's movement from time to time (by pressing <SPACE>)

Fleeing can be an option if your character reaches the border of the combat zone but remaining dying or unconscious party members will not have any chance then.
