It’s been a while since our last update. We’ve been hard at work designing maps and writing quests – and finishing up the combat demo, which is taking us longer than expected. The main reason for that is the combat demo’s scope: rather than just giving you an arena with a handful of fights, we give you a small story, four different maps with varied environments, shops to buy new equipment in, and the full character creation system as it will appear in the complete game.

The combat already works very well, but we still need to finish up the character creation menu and the shopping interface, and the encounters you’re going to face in the combat demo will have to be playtested a couple of times to make sure it offers just the right amount of challenge. The combat demo is the first taste of the game you’re going to get, and we want to make sure the first impression is a great one. Honestly, we underestimated the actual amount of work the combat demo would require. At the end, we don’t want to release unfinished gameplay elements and that’s why we need to spend more time in designing, implementing and polishing than originally planned. Therefore we are moving the release date of the combat demo to January.

Character Creation

The most important part of any RPG is its character creation. Many of us have spent hours trying to create different character builds in Fallout, or assembling that perfect party of six in Icewind Dale or the old Gold Box titles. Realms Beyond is going to offer you a complex character creation tool that gives you all the classic choices you would expect – ability scores, classes, skills, feats – and some unique ideas of our own that allow you to further define your characters and their role in the world.

Rather than just picking a race and be done with it, Realms Beyond lets you choose your character’s origin: which region of the world does your character hail from? It is more than just a cosmetic choice, as your character’s origin will influence the knowledge of local customs, politics and events the character has, as well as the reaction some NPCs will have towards that character.

Furthermore, you will be able to select a descent for your characters: which social class they hail from and what they did before they became adventurers. Noble, craftsman, peasant – these descents also come with unique background knowledge for your character. Characters with a noble background will be familiar with the customs of the nobility, while characters with a peasant background will be able to tell a farmer why his crops are failing.

New Screenshots!

Finally, we want to give you some new eye candy to feast on: a few shots of some of the beautiful new locations we have built, and some shots from the combat demo maps in action will follow.

All this is magnificent !!! Great developers so on towards the game that all of us backers are waiting for !!! The screens are great, something I was wondering. If there are also the maps of the combat demo, does that mean that we will have to fight with very astute killing chickens in a field of grain for the harvest supremacy?

 No, the chicken are civil non combatants (for now).

We'll release the screens of the combat demo  maps later since I just noticed we still have some unfinished UI stuff in it.

The attention to detail in every single screenshot released is always admirable :)
This is one of the most good looking rpgs in general :)

Some feedback about the character creation panels.

1) About the Origins section.
From what I see in the screenshot, this part looks more like a 'chosse a race' than an origin. Is there anything you don't show us in this screen like the birthplace? Shouldn't this 'birthplace' element fits better in the biography section ?
2) About the Gender
Outside the 'born as a male/female', I guess there isn't much to tell there, so does it really worth its own section ? Can't you place this gender option anywhere else?
3) Abilities vs Origin/Class order.
If the player choose the 'buy point' system, he will benefits attributes bonus/malus depending on the race later, so the cost system regarding the min/max will loose some of its interest in its current order. Now if the player first need to choose a race before spending attributs points, the min/max will keep its interest. E.G. a player wants to create an elf with 18 in Dex. He will spend less points if he will first have to increase Dex to 16 then benefits later a 2 point bonus in Dex than first start with Dex at 10 by default,  benefit 2 points from the race bonus then increase the dex from 12 to 18 with the point buy system during the attrinut selection phase.
4) About the biography
Will some class/race choices unlock some unique biography? Just imagine a half orc barbarian from the Wildland who would be the son/daugther of a warlord. Just another kind of descent there

About shopping:

Is there some banking system (or private moneylenders) somewhere in the game?

In all the games inspired by the 3.5e I have always seen the choice of race / origin before the selection of abilities for the question of race modifiers. Another thing that is not clear to me from the screen is the change in the appearance of the character. Is there a selection of options during genre selection? Also in this case the race / origin should influence the appearance of the character so it should be done before the choice of the kind.

You can't learn that from static screenshots, but you can always go back to the first attribute screen to re-roll or re-assign your stats.

The character creation process is not strictly sequential.
